The whistle blew and the crowd charged forward out the gate and off went over 100 cyclist on the first annual La Tour de Bayou put on Kent Plantation House. As the cyclist left one by one out the gate, myself and my mother were not there. We were on the other side of the property without even knowing the event had started. With a few (ok, many) others telling us to go, go, go, we jumped on our bikes to catch up.
Which we did in due time and past several others and kept a steady pace from that. With just a couple rest stops on the 25 mile route, my mother and me were beyond excited to get things started. As it was her first distance bike ride and mine in many months. Riding the road bike around my town is as scary as running head first into a live firing range. So I tend to do mostly trail riding on my mountain bike. What this day did for me however, was to realize how much I missed the road and how relaxing it could be. I will look for more like this and I know my mother will do the same. The cyclist bug has bit her and she’s looking for every chance to ride now. Which is awesome, and I am very proud of her.
Beyond the ride, the Kent House hosted a great event with free entertainment, food, and a chance to relax after the rides. I do hope they continue this new tradition for as many years as possible. Was a great turn out with over 600 people total and I think that shows how much people are interested in cycling events.
Biking has become a huge part of my life in the past few years. All throughout college I used a bike to commute everywhere I went but about 2 and a half years ago, I started riding trails. It has become a favorite activity of mine and can’t see a life without it. Completing most trails in central and north Louisiana multiple times, I have a craving to explore outside this state and conquer other terrain. Which is something I hope to do this summer. Finding a job might hinder and help though.
I’m always talking friends into at least trying it out and most falling in love. Which is another great part about it, the community. Moving back home in Alexandria, I am a bit lost on the community here but have been looking to get more involved. The bike shop will start back up and hopefully I can find some others groups around. Kincaid has some amazing options and plenty of them to explore. So I know there has to be a community around here. Just have to dig deeper. If you know of anyone or ride yourself, let me know! Hit the trail together sometime.
The pictures above are some shots I have taken of my love, a Trek Hifi Pro.
I would like to share with you my final senior project, while in-progress. This project has been something I have been doing for a few months now and I am in the last stretch. I am documenting the individuals that are a part of the cycling community here in Ruston, Louisiana. It is an investigation into who they are and how they are cyclist within their own worlds.
If you’d like to share any constructive criticism, it’s welcomed. Though, I am sharing this because I need help in my last couple weeks. I am looking for individuals that I can take pictures of. To share who they are as a cyclist.
I’ve attached a few samples of what I’ve done so far. In the end, a select few will be shown in my classes gallery show held in April. So, if you’re are interested, please let me know! Email me at cody@thecb.co Thanks!
My new 2011 Trek HiFi Pro. At 29in wheels, I am loving this bike like no other. Have been riding Lincoln Parish Park as much as possible since I got back to Ruston and don’t plan on slowing down. Though, I do plan on hitting up some other trails in northern Louisiana. Can only do a trail so many times before you’re craving more. Looking to do some in Shreveport then move on from there. If anyone is interested in joining me, just let me know!
Accessories are slowly coming in as I wait for my new bike to arrive at the shop. Can’t wait to get all together and spend my day biking.
I am about to make a life altering decision soon and I must say I can’t wait. What might this decision be about? Well, simply, it’s what road bike I’m going to get. Yes, I have a very dramatic life.. The decisions are rather endless with that large amount of brands, components and styles available, but that has been narrowed down with my decision to purchase the bike in a local bike shop so that I may test and eventually be fitted. Being a native to Louisiana, bike shops are sparse and their brands are rather in common. So, I’ve narrowed the brands down to Cannondale, Raleigh, and Trek and to help narrow down even more, the components need to be the Shimano 105’s. Which helps pin point a good price range as well. I must admit, I am a mountain kind of guy and the road world is completely new to me, but I’m excited more than any thing right now with hitting the pavement. I’ve narrowed down my choice in each brand to one bike, now the choice is, which one? I’ve listed below my choices, so which do you like the most? Reasons? Experience? Anything would help at this point, haha. Plan to do test rides of each in the next couple weeks to hopefully narrow the choice down even more.
(in no certain order)
Cannondale Synapse Alloy 5 105

So there are my choices. Right now, I’m kind of leaning toward the Cannondale for one reason or another. Though I do like the color on the Raleigh, haha. Let me know what you think! Would help greatly.
